Switchfoot

Hey everyone!

Today I'd like to share some music by Switchfoot; a band that I've loved for years and years.

Switchfoot is a rock band from San Diego, consisting of five surfer dudes who never finished their school but are the most poetic, musical guys I've ever listened to. Also they are christians and their music is very deep and inspiring. I've seen them live twice and absolutely loved them. I kind of grew up with their music, so here's an old song that I've loved forever and their new album. Have fun!

Radical Face

You might know the song Welcome Home by this band, from the Nikon advertisement. Well, that is where I got to know Radical Face. I listen to a lot of their songs, and I love all of them. His voice is very distinctive and I love voices like that. The lyrics in this song really touched me when I heard them for the first time, and they still do.

I still miss you
There's no going home
There's no going home
What a name like mine
I still dream of you
But everyone knows
Yeah, everyone knows
If you can, let it go

Please leave a comment with your favourite song of the week and tell me why! I love hearing new music!

Mia

Style inspiration: Ginnifer Goodwin

Hey guys!

A few days ago I started watching the series Once Upon A Time. I love the classic fairy tales like Snow White and Cinderella. I love princesses and dresses and crowns and chivalrous princes. So I thought I'd give it a shot.

The story is basically about all the fairy tale characters who were cursed by the Evil Queen, Snow White's stepmother. This curse stole away all the happy endings as a revenge on Snow White. Now all the characters are stuck in the real world in a town called StoryBrooke, where time stands still. No one remembers who they were in fairy tale land.

One of these characters is, as you might have guessed, Snow White. Gennifer Goodwin plays her and her real life 'twin' Mary Margaret Blanchard. As a kind and honest school teacher she is just like you'd imagine Snow White; a sweet, delicate and pale girl with dark hair. The way she dresses is perfectly balanced with this image we have of Snow White.

First of all her hair. It's perfect. It's dark, thick and beautiful like Snow White's, but it is short and modern to represent a Snow White-like girl in our reality.

In the show Mary Margaret wears the most beautiful clothes. Every time she appears on screen I want to just point and yell 'I WANT THOSE SHOES' or 'THAT SHIRT IS SO AMAZING'.

All the screen caps are from season 1, hopefully without any major spoilers and from The Ginnifer Goodwin fan site. I couldn't add too many pictures, because I didn't want to spoil anything for you, in case you want to watch it. I hope you do, though, it's filled with imagination and beautiful sceneries.

Mia

Dyed my hair!

Hey guys!

Yesterday I decided that I wanted to dye my hair. I don’t know if I’ve told it before, but I’m a huge fan of Doctor Who. It’s just an amazing show and it makes me very happy. I have been watching it for a year now and now I have arrived at the eleventh doctor. Finally. With the eleventh doctor Amy Pond arrived too. She is played by Karen Gillan and she has gorgeous red hair.

Just before I saw Karen, I watched a video made by Mascha (from beautygloss.nl) in which she dyes her hair brown with a red glow using henna. I got excited immediately, until I read the bit that says you can’t dye your hair with henna when you have already dyed it with chemical stuff. It would become green, and that was not the colour I was going for.
Still dyeing your hair with henna is a great choice. Henna is a very nutritious product for your hair and it makes it look healthy. A lot better than chemical stuff obviously.

This didn’t stop me from trying however. I bought 200 grams of henna powder at the health store. This is what the packaging basically says:

Use: 100 grams for short hair, 150 grams for long hair. Stir the henna with boiled water until it is a thick mush and add a few drops of lemon juice or vinegar. Massage this in your hair. Put a piece of plastic over it and a towel and let it sit for 10 minutes (light red hair) or longer (darker red). Rinse this out with water. Tip: before you apply it to your actual hair, try it on hair from your brush.

This is almost the same as Mascha said. Still my story is a lot different from hers, so I thought it would be good if I tell mine too.

As I said before, I had dyed my hair with chemical hair dye. This is I think two months ago now. I used hair from my brush and separated them into two little wisps of hair. I made a little bit of the stuff and put the hair on a piece of plastic, still separated. I waited ten minutes and washed one piece of hair. It was EXACTLY the kind of colour I wanted, but I still waited another ten minutes before I washed the second piece. It had practically the same colour, so I decided that it would be safe.

PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE YOU TRY THIS TOO: Do not use any iron things, no iron bowl, spoon or even aluminium foil. Any metal stuff will create a chemical reaction and make your hair green too. Be carefull!
Ew.. (without flash)

(With flash)

So, I washed my hair, made the green stuff and put it in my hair.
Before:

This is how it turned out eventually:

I know, my braid is not what it used to be this morning..

I must warn you (again)! Putting the stuff in is not very difficult, but getting it out is the tricky part. It took me at least an hour to wash it out. It becomes like clay on your head and there are little clumps of green stuff EVERYWHERE. I assure you, you will be cleaning your entire house after you’ve done this.

Still, I am very happy the way it turned out. I’m not Karen Gillan, but I’m ginger. I know the photos don't really show, but it really is red!

Bright Star

Hi everyone!

And we're back with an amazing film I've seen recently.

This film - Bright Star - is not just a film like any other to me. The film is about the life of the famous and ingenious poet John Keats. I had researched this tragic life of his before and I was already touched by the terrible events that took place in the short period of time.

When my sister suggested to watch this film, I was hesitant to agree. I was more in the mood for happy endings and funny quotes. Eventually I gave in and we watched it. This was probably the best choice I've made in the past weeks. Believe me: this film has affected me more than any romantic film.

I actually think that this film doesn't fit in the 'romantic film' genre, even though it's extremely romantic. It's so tragic that it stays in your mind for days. I'm the living proof because I think I watched it about a week ago and I'm still thinking about it all the time. Maybe that's just because I'm weird. Anyway, the film is so romantic and the ending is so miserable (and very well performed!).

However, I don't think just the magical performance of the amazing actors did the trick, nor the beautiful surroundings or the light atmosphere or the amazing costumes. No I think that the fact that all this really happened made me fall for this film forever.

The film is comparable to Becoming Jane (this film is about the (love)life of Jane Austen; also tragic) but I think Becoming Jane is somewhat lighter than Bright Star.

Watch the trailer!

Jónsi

Hey guys! Did you have a nice time listening to this music? I have been very addicted to this lately. Especially now I'm in my exam period (very stressful!) I like to listen to this very calming music. Studying is a lot easier with this and Jónsi even provided for a new lullaby.

Jónsi is the lead singer of the band Sígur Rós. (I have already mentioned this band once, check it out)
This band is Icelandic and makes post-rock music. The voice of Jónsi is very typical and makes me smile. It's really something you either love or hate. I happen to enjoy listening to the high sounds and the natural breaks in his voice while singing. I know many readers will roll their eyes now, or stop reading, but please: open up to new experiences!

I think many people stay in their own safe music genre. Maybe it's a good idea to step out of this sheltered area and experiment with new things. I have really enjoyed getting to know this whole new sort of music, the new sounds, vocals and instruments. I still don't know all their songs and every time I hear a new one, it surprises me. Like I said, the vocals are extremely good and - for me - comfortable to listen to. The intros are always calm, soothing - or sometimes extraordinarily filled with energy. Every song has at least one sudden burst of instruments that gives me goose bumps every time.

I really love the artwork on the album Go by Jónsi. The colours are really beautiful and I like the feathers he uses in his music videos.

I started with some solo songs of Jónsi (and in between a Sígur Rós recording). I did this because I think this music might be easier for some of you. It's English and maybe a bit happier than Sígur Rós. Sígur Rós' songs are more dramatic and depressing (not in my opinion though). I like them both. Jónsi is more music to sing along as loud as you can (and as high as you can) and Sígur Rós is more for studying because it's really hard to sing Icelandic..

Is this enough to make you try new things and stop judging me for listening to 'weird' music?

Thank you for your attention.

Mia

What´s in my bag?

I always love to see what others have in their bags. I checked a lot of them out on Flickr and I noticed that everyone has lip balm, a moleskine book and pens. I always have my lipbalm in my pocket with my phone, so they´re not on the picture. This is my bag:

There is:
- My jumbo (supermarket) name thingy and little notebook
- Stuff to write with
- My wallet
- Paper handkerchiefs
- A calculator
- Some cookies
- A receipt
- My diary
- Gloves
- Something to drink
- Moleskine 'Le Petit Prince' special edition
- A notebook without lines
- Above my Moleskine is some liquorice to keep me alive
- A pen
- My keys
- Hand cream
- A little flashlight
- My pink IPod shuffle
- A USB stick
- Deodorant
- Chewing gum
- Medicine
I usually bring a book just to read, but I didn't have it in my bag when I took the picture. Currently I'm reading The Hunger games (part I) for the third time.

It has the autograph of the bass player of The Gentlemen! Super proud of that!
I forgot to put this with the other stuff, but it's a bottle of water.
My sisters bag is of course a lot more interesting than mine!

Especially with her Diana+ camera:

I'd love to see what's in your bags!! Send me pictures and I'll definitely watch them :)

My Everyday Make-up Basket

Since a while I have an ´everyday basket´ on my dressing table. It´s filled with very non-fancy make up, but it's good enough for me :)

First is foundation. This brand Catrice is very cheap, but the foundation has great coverage.

ELF eyelash curler, nothing special.

ELF higlighter. This is probably my favourite product of this basket.

Hooray, deodorant.

Pressed powder to set my foundation.

A very simple black eye pencil.

My favourite blushcolour, Angel by NYX. It's a beautiful light pink matte colour. It looks very natural on my skin.

Day and night cream. Can't live without them! I have a very sensitive skin and it really hurts if I don't moisturise it.

Mascara, False Lash Effect by Maxfactor. I really hate this mascara. It's not waterproof, but it's good enough for just making my lashes look a bit longer and blacker.

Eye cream. Again, my skin won't survive without me moisturising it.

Lipbalm from the Body Shop. I bought 3 of these in London for 6 pounds. It really helps my lips to stay normal. I've got it in Mango Peach, Strawberry and Water Melon which I haven't opened yet (how strong of me). I have a lot more lipbalms, but I´m not going to show them all.. I especially love the H&M lipbalms, they really make your lips softer than before.

My favourite lipstick by Catrice. It was limited edition I believe, so I won't be able to get it once I've finished it.

And my last product is my golden liquid liner! I really love it, even though I don't use it every day. I don't have much time for my make up. I'm sorry for that because I really ove doing my make up. I've got eyeshadow palettes as well, but I don't use that every day either.

Well, I hope this has been a very interesting post. I was really excited to show the world how I have made an everyday basket of make up :)

Love,
Mia
